Pros and cons of WordPress

WordPress has a number of advantages. It is by far the best platform for those who want to launch a site without any programming knowledge. However, this platform is also suitable for programmers because it is open source and can be modified to meet the needs of any project. However, the CMS also has some pitfalls that you need to be aware of.

Pros

  • Low cost. You only pay for the domain and web hosting. The WordPress software and many of the plugins and themes are free.
  • Easy installation and update process. Unlike many other content management systems, WP requires minimal setup and you can upgrade with a single click.
  • Ease of management. You do not need knowledge in programming for everyday tasks such as writing and editing publications, uploading and editing images, user management, adding menus, installing plugins and themes.
  • Custom design. With thousands of pre-made themes you can easily find a design that suits your type of business. For example, there are special themes for restaurants, medical fields, small businesses, gastronomy blogs and so on.
  • Special features. You can use plugins to expand the standard features of this CMS. Usually you can find a plugin for any special task from search engine optimization to event booking.
  • The community is always ready to help. WordPress has a huge community all over the world and a very useful support forum. If there is something you don’t know or have a problem with, you can quickly find a solution.
  • Open Source. You’ll never have to pay for WordPress software, which you can’t do with other CMSs.

Minuses

  • Security issues. Since this content management system is the base for more than 35% of the sites on the web, it’s very prone to hacks. But, if you install security plugins, you greatly reduce the risk.
  • Third-party content. A lot of WordPress plugins and themes are created by third-party developers and may have some bugs. Before installing a new plugin or theme, always read the description and reviews and, if you’re still unsure, ask around the community.
  • Page load time. If you have too many plugins, your site may load slowly. Installing a caching plugin usually solves this problem.

History of the Platform.

The history of WordPress began in 2003 when two developers, Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little, began creating a new blogging platform based on b2/cafeblog software. They soon abandoned that project and decided to continue development in their own way.

They released the first version of WordPress 1.0 in January 2004. The system was very different from the feature-rich CMS we know today. However, it already had most of the core features we use today, such as a WordPress editor, an easy installation process, custom permanent links, a user management system, the ability to moderate content, and more.

Since 2004, the platform has undergone an incredible transformation. Today, the project is developed, managed and supported by an open-source community of thousands of participants from all over the world. They work remotely, many of them volunteer and can only meet in person at a WordCamp conference. WordPress is still actively developing. New versions are released every 2 or 3 months. With each version comes new functionality and improved security of the platform.
